Can you find out who called from a private number?

By the StoryCheck team · 6 min read · Published

In Australia, you cannot find out who called from a private number yourself. The caller's number is withheld before it reaches your phone, and no app, website or reverse lookup, StoryCheck included, can reveal it. What you can do is silence or block private calls on your phone, ask your carrier to trace repeated or threatening calls, and report harassment to police, who can get the details through the carriers.

A withheld number is frustrating, but it still leaves you options.

Why does a call show as a private number?

Because the caller chose to hide it. Anyone can block their number for a single call by dialling 1831 before the number from a home phone, or #31# from a mobile, and can hide it on every call through their telco or the Show My Caller ID setting on most mobiles. Dialling 1832, or *31# on a mobile, shows the number again for one call. Depending on the phone, a withheld call shows as Private, No Caller ID, Blocked or Unknown.

There are limits on who can hide. ACMA says the number is still passed on when someone calls 000 or 112, even from a silent number. And telemarketers are not allowed to hide at all: the Do Not Call Register's guidance says callers must clearly display a contact number, and if it says private, they are breaking the rules.

Can anyone reveal a private number?

Not you, and not any app. The caller's own carrier always knows which line made the call, which is why private calls can be traced, but carriers do not hand that number to the person who received the call. As ALDI Mobile puts it in its own guidance, private numbers can be traced, but neither it nor any other carrier whose customer made threatening or abusive calls will disclose the number.

Instead, Australian telcos follow an industry code, C525:2023 Handling of Life Threatening and Unwelcome Communications. It sets out how carriers cooperate to trace calls that are life threatening or part of a pattern of unwelcome calls, texts or emails, including sending warning letters to the account behind them. Carriers work with police when asked for information in an investigation.

Be wary of any app or website that promises to unmask a private number. Australian carriers do not release withheld numbers to the public, and StoryCheck cannot reveal a private number either. A lookup only works once you have an actual number to check.

What should you do about harassing private calls?

  1. 1

    Keep a record

Write down the date, time and length of every call, and what was said. Carriers ask for dates and times to start a trace, and police will want the same.

  2. 2

    Do not engage

Hang up without responding. A reaction is often exactly what a harasser wants.

  3. 3

Ask your carrier for a trace

Contact your own telco, explain that it is a pattern of unwelcome calls, and ask them to start a call trace. They will not tell you who it is, but a successful trace can lead to a warning being sent to the caller, and the records matter if police become involved.

  4. 4

    Go to the police

If a call threatens your safety, call 000 straight away. Otherwise, contact police on 131 444. Using a phone to menace, harass or cause offence is a federal crime under section 474.17 of the Criminal Code, with a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

  5. 5

    Get support

If the calls are part of domestic or family violence, 1800RESPECT, on 1800 737 732, offers confidential counselling and support 24 hours a day.

How do you stop private number calls?

  • iPhone: go to Settings, then Apps, then Phone, and choose Screen Unknown Callers. Ask Reason for Calling makes an unknown caller say why they are calling before your phone rings, and Silence sends them straight to voicemail.
  • Android with the Google Phone app: open Settings, then Blocked numbers, and turn on Unknown to block calls from private or unidentified numbers. Under Caller ID and spam, Filter spam calls stops suspected spam from ringing.
  • WhatsApp: go to Settings, then Privacy, then Calls, and turn on Silence unknown callers.
  • Your carrier: Telstra adds scam warnings to suspicious calls automatically, TPG flags some calls as a suspected scam, and Australian telcos blocked 2.9 billion scam calls between December 2020 and March 2026 under ACMA's anti-scam rules.

One caution: screening every unknown caller can also hold back a call you were expecting. Silenced calls still go to voicemail on an iPhone, so check it every so often.

What if they call back on a number you can see?

Sometimes the same caller later rings from a visible number, sends a text or leaves a callback number in a voicemail. The moment you have an actual number, you have something to check. A reverse lookup shows the line type, a possible name with a confidence level, public profiles linked to the number and scam signals, privately and in about 60 seconds. If the same number keeps ringing, who keeps calling me explains how to read the pattern, and our guide to stopping unwanted calls covers the Do Not Call Register and where to complain.

Common questions

Can I find out who called me from a private number?

Not yourself. The number is withheld before it reaches you, and no app or lookup can reveal it. Your carrier can trace repeated or threatening calls and police can obtain the details, but the carrier will not tell you the number directly.

Can StoryCheck unmask a private number?

No. StoryCheck cannot reveal a withheld caller ID, and no legitimate service can. A lookup only works on a number you can actually see, such as one that texts you or is left in a voicemail.

Are telemarketers allowed to call from a private number?

No. The telemarketing rules require callers to display a contact number, and the Do Not Call Register says a telemarketer showing as private is breaking the rules. Note the time and the company and complain to ACMA.

Can the police find out who is behind a private number?

Yes. Carriers can trace private calls and work with police when asked for information. If the calls threaten your safety, call 000; otherwise contact police on 131 444.

How do I block private numbers on my phone?

On an iPhone, use Screen Unknown Callers in the Phone settings. In Android's Google Phone app, turn on Unknown under Blocked numbers. WhatsApp has its own Silence unknown callers setting under Privacy, then Calls.
