How to find someone's social media from a phone number

By the StoryCheck team · 7 min read · Published

You cannot type a phone number into Facebook, Instagram or TikTok and get a profile back. Facebook switched off search by phone number in April 2018 after the feature was abused to scrape profiles, and the big platforms now use numbers quietly, to suggest accounts to people who already have the number saved. In Australia, the routes that still work are contact suggestions, searching the number and any username it leads to, and a private reverse lookup that lists public profiles openly linked to the number.

Because it was abused. Until April 2018, anyone could type a phone number or email address into Facebook's search box and land on the matching profile. Meta switched the feature off after finding that malicious actors had used it, together with account recovery, to scrape public profile information, and said most people on Facebook could have had their public profile collected that way. Today, on the big social networks, a number only connects to a profile indirectly, through contact suggestions, and each platform gives its users a setting to limit that.

Does syncing your contacts find their profile?

Sometimes, and it is the trick most people try first: save the number, let an app read your contacts, and see who it suggests. Meta's help pages explain that with contact uploading, the names, numbers and email addresses in your address book are matched against its users, and matches can appear as friend suggestions on Facebook or accounts to follow on Instagram.

Know the trade-off before you try it. You hand over your entire address book, not just one number, and suggestions never say why they appeared, so a face in People You May Know is not proof it belongs to that number. It can also work in reverse. TikTok says that if you sync your contacts, it may suggest your account to people whose numbers you have saved, so the person you were curious about may see you pop up as a suggestion.

To see whether a number has a WhatsApp profile, you do not need to sync anything. Opening a chat with wa.me/ and the number shows whatever their settings allow, as explained in our WhatsApp number guide.

How do you search a number and a username properly?

  1. 1

Search the number in every format

Search "0491 570 156", "0491570156" and "+61 491 570 156", each in quotes. People put their numbers in marketplace listings, club pages, business profiles and old forum posts, and each format picks up different pages.

  2. 2

    Follow any username you find

Most people reuse a handle. Once the number leads to one account, search that exact username on other platforms and in a search engine. The same handle on Instagram, TikTok and a gaming profile often belongs to the same person, although a common handle can belong to several.

  3. 3

    Search their name with context

Add a suburb, a workplace or a school to their name. If a name is all you have, the StoryCheck name search narrows it down by age range and state or territory, so you are not guessing between namesakes.

  4. 4

    Reverse search the photo

A profile photo found through the number can be checked with an image search. If it appears under another name, stop and read how to tell if someone is real before going further.

  5. 5

    Check that it adds up

A real person's accounts agree with each other: the same face, a plausible age, the same city, and friends who have commented and tagged them over years rather than weeks.

What does a reverse lookup add?

A reverse lookup does the legwork in one private report in about 60 seconds. It checks the number against licensed telephony data and open sources, and returns public profiles and web mentions openly linked to it, whether the number is active on WhatsApp with the profile photo or business name when visible, a possible name where one exists, the line type and scam signals. Each result is a possible match with a confidence level, and the person is never notified.

It does not search inside dating apps, open private accounts or read messages, and nothing lawful can. If the question behind your search is whether someone is on Tinder, Hinge or Bumble, finding dating profiles by number explains honestly what can and cannot be checked. For an email address instead of a number, use the email lookup.

Why might nothing turn up for a number?

  • Their accounts are private, or they never linked this number to them.
  • They use a different number for social media, often an old one or a work phone.
  • The number is new or has recently been reassigned, so older traces point to the previous owner.
  • They may be under 16. Since 10 December 2025, age-restricted platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, X and YouTube have had to take reasonable steps to stop Australians under 16 having accounts. WhatsApp and Messenger are not on eSafety's list.
  • The number belongs to a scammer. Disposable and VoIP numbers are often set up for one campaign and linked to nothing.

An empty result is not evidence of anything on its own. It only means nothing public is connected to that number.

Is it OK to look someone up this way?

For the reasons most people have, yes: working out who has messaged you, checking that someone you are talking to is who they say, or protecting yourself from a scam. The check reads publicly available information and licensed sources. StoryCheck is not a credit reporting body under the Privacy Act, so results must not be used for decisions about credit, employment, insurance or tenancy. And if someone has blocked you or asked you not to contact them, a lookup is not a way around that: using a phone or social media to harass someone is an offence under the Commonwealth Criminal Code.

Common questions

Can I find someone's Instagram with their phone number?

Not directly. The dependable routes are contact syncing, which may surface the account as a suggestion without saying why, and following any username the number leads to. A reverse lookup lists public profiles openly linked to the number, as possible matches with a confidence level.

Can you still find a Facebook account by phone number?

Not through Facebook search, which stopped accepting phone numbers in April 2018 after the feature was used to scrape profiles. Numbers now only work indirectly, through contact suggestions, and each user controls who can look them up by the number they gave Facebook.

Will they know I looked for their social media?

A StoryCheck lookup sends nothing to the number and the person is never notified. Contact syncing is different: TikTok, for one, says syncing may suggest your account to people whose numbers you have saved, so the person could see you as a suggestion.

Why can't I find any social media for a number?

Usually because the accounts are private, use another number, or were never linked to this one. Since December 2025, the major platforms have had to take reasonable steps to keep Australians under 16 off them. An empty result means nothing public is linked, not that the person has no accounts.

Can StoryCheck see private or dating app profiles?

No. StoryCheck only reports what is publicly available or held in licensed sources, such as public profiles openly linked to a number and the WhatsApp profile photo when it is visible. It cannot open private accounts, read messages or search inside dating apps.
