Can you find out who called from a withheld number?

By the StoryCheck team · 6 min read · Published

In the UK you usually cannot find out who called from a withheld number: 1471 will only tell you the caller withheld it, and no legitimate app or website, StoryCheck included, can reveal it. What you can do is screen or block hidden callers on your phone, report sales calls that hide their number, and, if the calls are threatening or persistent, go to the police, who can have your network trace them.

Most withheld calls are harmless. The ones that are not can be traced by the police, not by an app.

What do Withheld, Private and No Caller ID mean?

The label on your screen tells you why the number is missing. "Withheld" or "Private number" means the caller chose to hide it, by dialling 141 before your number or by withholding it permanently. "Unknown", "Unavailable" or "No Caller ID" usually means the number never reached your network in the first place.

What each label on a UK phone means

What can 1471 tell you about a withheld call?

On a BT landline, dialling 1471 tells you the last number that called, unless the caller withheld it by dialling 141 or rang from a switchboard extension. For a withheld call you simply hear a recorded message saying the caller withheld their number. Finding out the last number is free; pressing 3 to ring it back is charged. On a mobile, the call log simply repeats the label you saw when it rang.

Withheld does not mean sinister. BT points out that most ex-directory customers withhold their numbers, that some businesses do it by default and that volunteers such as Samaritans working from home may hide theirs, and says only a small minority of calls are made with malicious intent. O2 notes that NHS medical calls are often anonymous too.

Can any app or website reveal a withheld number?

No legitimate one can, and StoryCheck cannot either. When a caller withholds their number, the networks still carry it but do not show it to you. The networks will trace malicious calls, but O2, for example, says it passes that information to the police and only the police. Treat any app or site that promises to unmask withheld UK numbers with deep suspicion, especially if it wants payment or access to your call log first.

A lookup becomes useful the moment you have an actual number. If the same caller later rings from a visible number, texts you, leaves a callback number in a voicemail or messages you on WhatsApp, a reverse lookup on that number shows the line type (mobile, landline or VoIP), the network where known, whether it is active on WhatsApp and any public profiles or scam signals linked to it. The person is never notified. If one visible number keeps ringing, our guide to repeat callers helps you place it.

How do you screen or block withheld calls?

  1. 1

    iPhone

Go to Settings, then Apps, then Phone, and choose Ask Reason for Calling, so your iPhone answers unknown callers first and shows you who they are and why they rang, or Silence, which sends unsaved numbers to voicemail.

  2. 2

    Android

In the Google Phone app, open Settings, then Blocked numbers, and turn on Unknown. That blocks calls from private or unidentified numbers while unsaved numbers still ring. Other Android diallers have similar settings.

  3. 3

    BT landline

BT Call Protect, included with BT home phone plans at no extra cost, can send withheld, international and unrecognised numbers to a junk voicemail. BT's Anonymous Call Reject, a paid extra, refuses withheld calls and tells the caller to redial without withholding their number.

  4. 4

    Other landlines

Ask your provider what call screening or anonymous call blocking it offers.

Blocking hidden callers has a cost. BT warns that some public services, such as the police and hospitals, may be unable to reach customers who use Anonymous Call Reject, and O2 notes that NHS medical calls are often anonymous. Screening, which lets a caller explain themselves, is safer than blocking outright.

When can the police trace a withheld number?

When the calls are malicious. O2 says malicious, abusive or threatening calls are a criminal offence: call 999 if the threats feel real and immediate, and 101 if not. If the numbers are withheld, the police may ask you to contact your network, which will trace the calls and pass the details to the police. BT customers can also call BT's Nuisance Calls Bureau on 0800 411422, Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm, which investigates malicious calls, spoofing and scam calls.

  • Note the date and time of every call.
  • Write down what was said, or that the line was silent.
  • Record the label shown: Withheld, Unknown, International.
  • Keep any voicemails and texts that arrived around the same time.

Sales calls are a separate matter. UK rules require a company making a marketing call to say who is calling and let its number, or another contact number, be displayed, so a sales call from a withheld number is itself a breach you can report to the Information Commissioner's Office. Our guide to stopping nuisance calls covers that route.

Common questions

Does 1471 work on withheld numbers?

No. 1471 tells you the last number that called, but if the caller withheld it you only hear a message saying so. It also cannot show numbers from switchboard extensions.

Can I find out who called from a private number for free?

Not by yourself. The networks hold the number and release it only to the police, when calls are malicious. You can screen future calls with your phone's settings, and if the caller ever uses a visible number, a reverse lookup can tell you about that number.

Can StoryCheck reveal a withheld number?

No. StoryCheck, like any legitimate service, cannot unmask a withheld caller. It checks numbers you can actually see, returning the line type, network, WhatsApp presence and public traces, and it never notifies the owner.

Why would a genuine caller withhold their number?

For plenty of ordinary reasons. BT notes that most ex-directory customers withhold their numbers, some businesses do it by default and volunteers working from home may hide theirs. O2 notes that NHS medical calls are often anonymous, so agree a time window if you are expecting one.

Is it legal for a company to cold call me from a withheld number?

No. Under the UK's rules on marketing calls, a company making a sales call must say who is calling and allow its number, or an alternative contact number, to be displayed. Report withheld sales calls to the ICO.
