How to find a name from a UK phone number
By the StoryCheck team · 6 min read · Published
Finding a name from a UK phone number works well for businesses and rarely for private mobiles. Search the number in every format it might have been written, look at the name and photo its owner shows on WhatsApp, check the number against the official website of any organisation the caller claimed to represent, and run a reverse lookup on whatever is left. The UK has no public directory of mobile numbers, so a service that promises a name for every 07 number is promising more than UK data allows.
Why is there no directory of UK mobile numbers?
Landline numbers whose owners have chosen to be listed appear in phone books and through 118 directory enquiry services, and both work from a name to a number, not the other way round. A 118 call is not cheap either: Ofcom caps what the service can charge at £3.65 per 90 seconds, on top of your provider's access charge. For mobiles there is no public directory at all. That is why a search that finds a plumber's landline in seconds usually finds nothing on a personal 07 number. The search has not failed: in most cases the number was simply never published.
Which route works for which kind of number?
| Route | Works well on | Where it stops |
|---|---|---|
| Searching the number in every format | Businesses, trades, surgeries and numbers other people have already complained about | Personal mobiles, which are almost never published |
| WhatsApp: save the number or open a wa.me link | Active personal mobiles, because the profile photo is visible to any user by default | The name is whatever the owner typed, and some people hide their photo |
| The organisation's official website or GOV.UK | Calls claiming to be a bank, HMRC, a council or a courier | It confirms or rules out the claim, not who is really calling |
| Caller ID and spam apps | Numbers that many people have already flagged | Ofcom notes that spam warnings can help but are not always right |
| A reverse lookup | Private 07 mobiles and VoIP or virtual numbers | A possible match with a confidence level, and on a private UK mobile often no name at all |
Work through them in that order. The free routes settle most business numbers within a minute, and the reverse lookup exists for the case they cannot touch: a personal mobile that has never been posted anywhere. If you only want to know what the dialling code itself reveals, our guide to UK prefixes reads every range, from 07 to 118.
How do you search a UK number properly?
- 1
Try every format
Search the number in quotation marks exactly as it appeared, then without spaces and in international form. For a mobile shown as "07700 900123", that means also trying "07700900123", "+44 7700 900123" and "447700900123". Each format turns up different pages.
- 2
Add a site filter
If the results are crowded, add site:facebook.com or site:linkedin.com after the number, or the web address of a local forum. People put their mobile on business pages, club websites and classified adverts more often than they remember.

Read what comes back with care
A post on a complaints forum tells you what other people experienced, not who holds the number today. Mobile numbers are recycled, so an old advert can point to a previous owner.
The example numbers on this page come from the range Ofcom reserves for TV and radio drama, 07700 900000 to 07700 900999, so they belong to nobody. Swap in the number you are checking.
What can WhatsApp tell you about the owner?
WhatsApp is used by 90% of UK online adults, according to Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 report, so a personal mobile is likely to have an account. Save the number to your contacts and open WhatsApp: by default any user can see a profile photo, and a face is often enough to recognise someone or to run a reverse image search. If the number has already messaged you there, WhatsApp also shows the country it is registered in and any groups you have in common. Treat the display name with care. It is whatever the owner typed, which may be a nickname, an emoji or a business name. Business accounts are labelled as such, and a blue tick next to the name means Meta has verified the business. Our guide to who is behind a WhatsApp number goes through every clue the app gives.
What does a reverse lookup return on a UK number?
A reverse lookup is the route for the numbers nothing else resolves. StoryCheck cross-references licensed telephony data with open sources and returns what it can find: the line type (mobile, landline, VoIP or virtual number), the network, whether the number is active on WhatsApp with the profile photo or business name when the owner's settings make them visible, public profiles and web mentions openly linked to the number, scam and risk signals, and a possible name with a confidence level when one exists. The check takes about 60 seconds and the person is never notified.
On a private UK mobile, a name is often not available, because the number has never been published or openly linked to one. A report with the line type, the WhatsApp photo and linked profiles but no name is an honest result, not a failed one. When a name does appear, read its confidence level rather than the name alone: numbers are recycled and handsets are shared.
If the same number keeps ringing rather than texting, who keeps calling me sorts repeat callers by pattern, and is this number a scam sets out the warning signs that matter more than any name.
Is it legal to find out who owns a number in the UK?
Yes, for personal use such as identifying an unknown caller, protecting yourself from fraud or checking someone you have started talking to. A lookup reads publicly available information and licensed sources. StoryCheck is not a credit reference agency, so results must not be used to make decisions about credit, employment, insurance or letting a property. Data protection works in both directions: under UK GDPR, anyone can ask an organisation what information it holds about them and ask for it to be deleted.
Common questions
Can I find out who owns a UK mobile number for free?
Sometimes. Searching the number in quotation marks and checking its WhatsApp profile cost nothing and settle most business numbers. Private 07 mobiles are not in any public directory, so those usually need a reverse lookup, and even then a name is not guaranteed.
Can my mobile network help with an unknown caller?
If the calls are abusive or threatening, yes. Ring your provider and ask for its nuisance or malicious calls team, which can take steps to protect you, and report the calls to the police on 101, or on 999 if you are in immediate danger.
Can I find a name from a withheld number?
No. When a caller withholds their number it is not shown to you, so there is nothing to search, and no lookup service can reveal it. Your options are to let the call go to voicemail, to use your network's call screening, or to report the calls if they are threatening.
Will the person know I looked up their number?
No. Searching the number, looking at its WhatsApp profile and running a reverse lookup send nothing to the person. WhatsApp does not show anyone who viewed their profile, and StoryCheck never notifies the person whose number is checked.
