Who is behind this WhatsApp number?

To find out who is behind a WhatsApp number in the UK, start with what WhatsApp shows you: the profile photo, which any user can see unless the owner has changed the default, the display name they chose, a Business label if it is a company, and, on a first message from a stranger, the country the number is registered in and any groups you share. A number lookup then adds what WhatsApp does not show, such as whether it is a real UK mobile or a virtual number and which public profiles are linked to it. Nobody's messages are read, and the owner is never notified.
What does WhatsApp show you about an unknown number?
WhatsApp is the UK's most used messaging app. Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 report found that 90% of UK online adults used it in 2025, and that 74% opened it every day in May 2025. That reach is exactly why so many unknown numbers turn up there, and why the app's own clues are worth reading before you reply.
- The number itself. WhatsApp says there is no way to hide your phone number when you use it, so the full number shows even if you have not saved it.
- The profile photo. By default any WhatsApp user can see it. The owner can limit it to My contacts, My contacts except... or Nobody, which is why some numbers show only a blank placeholder.
- The About text and last seen, which by default only the owner's contacts can see.
- A business label. Tap the name to open the profile: businesses are labelled as a WhatsApp Business account, and a blue tick next to the name means Meta has verified the business.
- A safety card on first contact. When someone who is not in your contacts messages you for the first time, WhatsApp shows the country their number is registered in and whether you have any groups in common, then lets you reply, add them, block them or report them.

How can you check a number on WhatsApp without saving it?
WhatsApp's click to chat link opens a chat with any number that has an active account, without adding it to your contacts. Type wa.me/ followed by the number in full international format, with no plus sign, spaces or leading zero, so a UK mobile written 07700 900123 becomes wa.me/447700900123. If the number is on WhatsApp, the chat opens and you can see whatever the owner shows to everyone. Nothing reaches them unless you send a message or call.
Read the country code before anything else. A +44 7 number is a UK mobile, while +44 70 is the 070 personal numbering range, which is not a mobile at all. A foreign code proves nothing on its own, but it should fit the story: a 'recruiter from a London agency' writing from an overseas number is a contradiction worth noticing. In StoryCheck lookup data from July to September 2026, North American +1 numbers made up 26% of the foreign numbers that people in the UK checked, more than any other country code.
What does a number lookup add to WhatsApp?
| What you want to know | What WhatsApp shows | What a StoryCheck lookup adds |
|---|---|---|
| Is the number on WhatsApp? | Only once you open a chat | Whether the number is active on WhatsApp |
| What do they look like? | The profile photo, if their settings allow it | The profile photo when visible, ready for a reverse image search |
| Is it a business? | The Business label and any blue tick | The business name when it is visible |
| Is it a real UK mobile? | Nothing | The line type (mobile, landline, VoIP or virtual number) and the network |
| Who is it? | The name they typed, which can be anything | Public profiles openly linked to the number, and a possible name when one exists |
| Is it risky? | The first-contact safety card | Scam and risk signals, such as a virtual or disposable line |
| Their messages, last seen or location | Never, unless they choose to share | Never. No lookup can see these |
A WhatsApp number check takes about 60 seconds and the owner is never told. On a private UK mobile a name is often not available, so the photo, the line type and any linked profiles are usually what settle it. For the wider question of names, see how to find a name from a UK number.
Which UK scams start with an unknown WhatsApp number?
- 'Hi Mum' messages from someone claiming to be your child on a new number, followed quickly by an urgent bill to pay. Ring the old number you already have before anything else, and read our Hi Mum scam guide for the variations.
- Job offers from recruiters you never contacted, promising easy money for simple online tasks. WhatsApp itself lists employment scams among its common examples, and our guide to job offer text scams explains how they turn.
- HMRC refunds and penalties. HMRC says that, apart from occasional reminders on the UK Government Channel, which you have to subscribe to and cannot reply to, it does not contact people on WhatsApp at all. Screenshot any other 'HMRC' message and email it to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk.
- Friendly 'wrong number' openers and investment tips from strangers. WhatsApp's help centre lists investment and romance scams among its common examples, often after a stranger has spent time gaining your trust.
How do you block and report a WhatsApp number in the UK?
- 1
Screenshot first
Blocking keeps the chat in your list, but take screenshots of anything important before you delete it, in case your bank or the police need to see it.
- 2
Block and report inside WhatsApp
Open the chat, tap the name or number at the top, then use the Report and Block options. WhatsApp receives up to five of the last messages the sender sent you, and the sender is not notified.
- 3
Do not forward it to 7726
7726 is for ordinary texts. Ofcom's advice is that messages from apps such as WhatsApp usually cannot be forwarded to 7726, so report them inside the app instead.
- 4
Silence unknown callers
If calls are the problem, switch on Silence unknown callers under Settings, Privacy, Calls. The calls are silenced rather than rejected, and you can still see them afterwards.
- 5
If money has gone
Ring your bank on 159, which connects you safely to your own bank, then report it to Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040 (England, Wales and Northern Ireland) or to Police Scotland on 101.
Can a lookup show who they talk to or when they are online?
No. WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted, and nothing outside the app can read them, see someone's last seen or show where they are. A StoryCheck lookup reads only publicly available information and licensed sources, for personal use such as identifying an unknown sender or checking someone you have started talking to, and it must never be used for decisions about credit, employment, insurance or letting a property. If the real question is about a partner, is my partner on dating apps sets out honestly what can and cannot be checked.
Common questions
Can I see who owns a WhatsApp number without saving it?
Partly. WhatsApp's click to chat link, wa.me followed by the number in international format, opens a chat without saving the contact and shows whatever the owner displays to everyone. A number lookup adds the line type, linked public profiles and a possible name when one exists.
Will they know I looked at their WhatsApp profile?
No. WhatsApp does not let anyone see who viewed their profile, and a StoryCheck lookup sends nothing to the number. They only see something if you message or call them.
Why can't I see their WhatsApp profile picture?
Most often because they have limited it to My contacts, My contacts except... or Nobody, or have not added a photo at all. By default any WhatsApp user can see a profile photo, so a missing one usually reflects the owner's own settings.
Does WhatsApp show where someone is?
No, not unless they choose to share their location with you in a chat. The country code only tells you where the number was issued, which is not necessarily where the person is, and no lookup can show someone's location.
How do I report a WhatsApp scam in the UK?
Block and report the sender inside WhatsApp, which passes up to five recent messages to WhatsApp without telling the sender. Screenshot HMRC-themed messages and email them to phishing@hmrc.gov.uk, and if you have lost money, ring your bank on 159 and report it to Report Fraud, or to Police Scotland on 101.
