How to find someone's social media from a phone number
By the StoryCheck team · 6 min read · Published
You can often find the public social media linked to a UK phone number in three ways: save the number and let the apps' contact features suggest the account, which Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and Snapchat all do unless the owner has opted out; search the number and any username it leads you to; and run a number lookup, which lists profiles openly linked to it. None of these reaches an account set to private, and none of them notifies the person.
How does contact syncing find an account?
Most social apps ask to read your address book so they can suggest people you know. When you allow it, the app compares the numbers in your contacts with the numbers its members have added to their own accounts. Meta, for example, says it uses phone numbers from uploaded contacts to check whether a contact already has a Facebook, Messenger or Instagram account, and uses that to power suggestions. The owner of the number stays in control: every platform in the table below has a setting that stops people finding them this way.
| Platform | How a number can lead to an account | The owner's setting that stops it |
|---|---|---|
| Facebook, Instagram, Messenger | Uploaded contacts are matched against accounts to suggest people | Controls on who Facebook can suggest their profile to based on their phone number |
| TikTok | If you sync your contacts, TikTok can suggest accounts linked to numbers in your address book | Suggest your account to others, with Contacts switched off |
| X (formerly Twitter) | Uploaded contacts can surface accounts linked to a number | Discoverability and contacts: Let others find you by your phone |
| Snapchat | People who have the number can find the account through it | The Mobile Number setting, where users can opt out of being found |
| Telegram | By default the number is shown only to people the owner has saved | Settings, Privacy and Security, Phone Number |
| Signal | Anyone with the number can see the person is on Signal, if the owner allows it | Who can find me by my number: Everybody or Nobody |
| The profile photo is visible to any user by default | Profile photo privacy: My contacts, My contacts except... or Nobody |
Syncing works both ways. TikTok, for instance, says that if you sync your phone contacts, your own account may be suggested to others if you have Contacts switched on under Suggest your account to others. Check your own settings first, and remember that syncing uploads everyone in your address book, not just the one number you are curious about.

What can a search engine find from a UK number?
Search the number in quotation marks in each format a person might have typed it: "07700 900123", "07700900123" and "+44 7700 900123" (the example comes from Ofcom's range reserved for TV drama, so it belongs to nobody). To look inside one platform, add a site filter such as site:instagram.com or site:facebook.com. This finds numbers that people have published themselves: on a business page, a club or school website, a marketplace listing or a public post asking friends to get in touch. It rarely finds a personal number that was only used to register an account, because the platforms do not publish those.
How do usernames connect one profile to the rest?
One profile is often the thread that leads to the others. People tend to reuse a handle, so a Telegram username, a TikTok handle or an Instagram name found once is worth searching in quotation marks on its own. Profile photos work the same way: a reverse image search with Google Lens or TinEye shows where the same picture appears publicly, and StoryCheck's reverse image search looks for exact and edited copies of a photo you add to your report, without facial recognition.
Before you decide you have the right person, look for:
- Two separate details that agree, such as the same photo and the same handle, or the same first name and the same town.
- A history of posts and followers built up over time, rather than a handful of recent uploads.
- Nothing important that contradicts what you already know, such as a different city or a different job.
What does a StoryCheck lookup add?
A phone number lookup gathers what is openly linked to the number in one private report: public profiles and web mentions, whether the number is active on WhatsApp with the profile photo when the owner's settings allow it, the line type and network, scam and risk signals, and a possible name with a confidence level when one exists. It takes about 60 seconds and nobody is notified. If you have an email address rather than a number, an email lookup does the same for accounts and public profiles linked to the address, and shows whether it appears in known data breaches.
Where does it stop, and what is fair to do?
No method reaches a private account, direct messages, a profile registered with a different number, or a number its owner has never used publicly. That is the honest boundary, and a service that claims to cross it is misdescribing itself. Within that boundary, looking at what someone has chosen to make public is lawful, and it is sensible before you meet someone or deal with a stranger, as our guide to checking whether someone is real explains.
It stops being fair when it turns into keeping watch on a person. In England and Wales, the stalking offence in the Protection from Harassment Act 1997 lists monitoring someone's use of the internet or email among its examples. If someone has blocked you, respect it. And results must never be used for decisions about credit, employment, insurance or letting a property.
Common questions
Can you find someone's Instagram by their phone number?
Sometimes. Meta says it checks uploaded contacts against Facebook, Messenger and Instagram accounts to suggest people, so saving a number and syncing your contacts can surface a profile, unless the owner has limited who can find them by phone number. A search in quotation marks or a number lookup can also turn up a public profile openly linked to the number.
Will the person know if I sync my contacts?
Syncing does not send them a message. It can, however, make your own account more visible: TikTok, for example, says your account may be suggested to others if you sync your contacts and have Contacts switched on under Suggest your account to others.
Why can't I find any profile for a number?
Because the owner may keep their accounts private, may have opted out of being found by number, or may have signed up with a different number or an email address. An empty result tells you nothing public is linked to that number, not that the person has no social media.
Is it legal to look up someone's social media in the UK?
Viewing what someone has made public is lawful, and a lookup reads only publicly available information and licensed sources, for personal use. Using it to monitor or harass someone is not, and results must never be used for decisions about credit, employment, insurance or letting a property.
