UK phone number search

Can you find someone's dating profiles from their number?

By the StoryCheck team · 6 min read · Published

No service can search inside Tinder, Hinge, Bumble or any other dating app by phone number, because the apps do not make their members findable that way. What a UK number can honestly reveal is the public trail around it: a possible name, profiles openly linked to the number, the WhatsApp profile photo when it is visible, and usernames or photos that may also appear on a dating profile. Those clues, and a few checks you can do yourself, are the truthful answer to the question.

Why can't anyone search dating apps by phone number?

Dating apps keep their members' details to themselves. Tinder, Hinge and Bumble do not let anyone look a member up by phone number, and no outside service has a way in: there is no lawful route into their member lists and no paid back door that a lookup service has and you do not. The one place Tinder does match phone numbers shows how the number is really used. Its Block contacts feature lets you share your own address book so that you can choose people you would rather not see, not so that you can find them.

In the UK, most of this comes down to a handful of apps. Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 report found that 11% of UK online adults visited a dating service in May 2025, with Tinder and Hinge level on about 1.5 million adult visitors each, followed by Bumble on 1.1 million and Grindr on 0.9 million. Ofcom has also found that most people who date online use more than one service, so what is true of one app tells you nothing about the others.

Which checks can you do yourself?

  1. 1

    Look at their WhatsApp profile

Save the number and open WhatsApp. The profile photo is visible to any user unless they have changed the default. Nothing is sent to them when you look, and WhatsApp does not show anyone who viewed their profile.

  2. 2

    Search that photo

Run the WhatsApp photo, or any photo you have of them, through Google Lens or TinEye. A dating profile is rarely public, but the same picture on a public profile, a forum or an old account can be.

  3. 3

    Search the usernames you know

If you know a handle they use on Instagram, TikTok or a gaming platform, search it in quotation marks. People reuse the same name across sites, and a dating bio sometimes names one of them.

  4. 4

Remember what a number cannot reach

An account opened with a different number or an email address will not show up through this number at all. That is one reason an empty result proves nothing.

If you have an email address for them as well, an email lookup checks it for linked accounts and public profiles in the same private way, and our guide to finding social media from a phone number covers contact syncing and username searches in more depth.

What does a StoryCheck lookup add?

A phone lookup brings the public side of the number together in one private report: the line type and network, whether the number is active on WhatsApp with the profile photo when it is visible, public profiles and web mentions openly linked to the number, and a possible name with a confidence level when one exists. It takes about 60 seconds and the person is never told. It does not and cannot search inside dating apps, read messages or show where anyone is.

This is one of the main reasons people in the UK run a check at all. In StoryCheck lookup data from July to September 2026, 30% of people checking a number from the UK said dating app activity was what they most wanted to know about.

How should you read what you find?

  • A profile you find is a fact about the past, not proof of what someone is doing now. Old profiles are often abandoned rather than deleted.
  • Finding nothing proves nothing. Private accounts, a second number or an email sign-up leave no trace that a number can reach.
  • A matching username or photo can be a coincidence. Look for two or three details that agree before you draw any conclusion.
  • Keep it proportionate. A check is for your own peace of mind or safety, not a way of monitoring someone.

If this is about a partner, a result can prompt a question but it cannot answer one. The most reliable information usually comes from a calm, direct conversation, ideally before you have made up your mind.

For the relationship side of this, is my partner on dating apps sets out what can be checked and how to raise it. If you have not met the person yet, checking someone before a first date is the better place to start.

Looking at what someone has made public is lawful, and a lookup reads only publicly available information and licensed sources, for personal use such as checking who you are talking to. What crosses the line is using it to keep watch on a person: in England and Wales, the stalking offence in the Protection from Harassment Act 1997 lists monitoring someone's use of the internet, email or other electronic communication among its examples. Results must never be used for decisions about credit, employment, insurance or letting a property.

Common questions

Can you search Tinder by phone number in the UK?

No. Tinder, like Hinge and Bumble, does not let anyone look members up by phone number, and no outside service can search inside the app. What can be checked is the public trail around a number: a possible name, linked public profiles and the WhatsApp profile photo.

Will they know I checked their number?

No. A StoryCheck lookup sends nothing to the number and no linked account is notified. Looking at their WhatsApp profile photo does not notify them either, because WhatsApp does not show anyone who viewed their profile.

Nothing came back. Does that mean they are not on dating apps?

No. It means nothing public is linked to that number. An account made with another number or an email address, or one kept private, leaves no trace a number can reach, so an empty result settles nothing either way.

Which dating apps are most used in the UK?

According to Ofcom's Online Nation 2025 report, Tinder and Hinge each reached about 1.5 million UK adults in May 2025, with Bumble on 1.1 million and Grindr on 0.9 million. Among women, Hinge and Bumble now reach more users than Tinder does.

Is it wrong to check whether my partner is on dating apps?

Wanting certainty is understandable, and looking at what is public is lawful. Keep it to a one-off check for your own peace of mind, remember that an old or empty result proves little, and let a direct conversation do the real work.
