How to check someone before a first date
By the StoryCheck team · 6 min read · Published
Before a first date in the UK, three checks do most of the work: confirm the person is real (a short video call and a reverse image search of their photos), check that the number they gave you fits their story (a UK mobile, a WhatsApp photo that matches, public profiles in the right place), and plan the date so you stay in control (a busy public place, your own way home and a friend who knows where you are). None of this is suspicion. It is ordinary care, and a genuine match will understand.
What is worth checking before you meet?
| Check | How to do it | What it tells you | What it cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|---|
| A short video call | On the app or WhatsApp, a few days before | They are the person in the photos | Anything about their intentions |
| Their photos | A reverse image search with Google Lens or TinEye | Whether the pictures appear elsewhere under another name | Much at all, if the photos were never public |
| Their number | A private number lookup | Line type, network, the WhatsApp photo when visible and linked public profiles | A name, in many cases, on a private UK mobile |
| Their name and job | A search, plus LinkedIn or an employer's website | Whether a real person matches the story | Anything, if they keep a low profile online |
| The app's verification | Look for the badge on their profile | On Tinder, that a short video selfie matched their photos | Who they are beyond their face |
How do you check they are who they say they are?
Start with a video call. Tinder's own UK safety advice calls a phone or video call a useful screening tool before meeting, and a genuine match will usually agree to five minutes. Then run each of their profile photos through a reverse image search: the same picture under another name, or on a model's account, settles the question. If they have told you their surname and job, a quick search will normally show a real person, for example a LinkedIn profile or a mention on an employer's website.
Keep the conversation in the app until you have done this. Tinder notes that people with bad intentions often try to move to text or messaging apps straight away, away from the app's own safety checks, and it may show a safety alert when it detects contact details being shared. When you do swap numbers, the number gives you something extra to check, and our guide to spotting a fake profile goes further on photos and stories that do not add up.
What can their phone number show you?
A private number lookup checks the number they gave you in about 60 seconds, and they are never notified. It shows the line type, so you can see whether it is a UK mobile or a VoIP or virtual line, the network, whether it is active on WhatsApp with the profile photo when their settings allow it, public profiles and web mentions openly linked to it, and any scam signals. On a private UK mobile a name is often not available, so treat the report as a consistency check: does the photo match, and do the profiles fit the person you have been talking to?
Dating is one of the main reasons people check a number at all. In StoryCheck lookup data from July to September 2026, 30% of people in the UK who checked a number said dating app activity was what they most wanted to know about.
How do you plan the date itself?
- Meet somewhere busy and public, and stay in public: Tinder's own advice is never to meet at your home, their home or any other private place.
- Tell a friend where you are going, who with and when, and share your location with them using your phone's built-in features or WhatsApp's live location.
- Sort out your own way there and back, so you can leave whenever you want.
- Keep your drink where you can see it, and your phone charged and with you.
- Know about Ask for Angela. At participating venues, asking staff for 'Angela' tells them quietly that you need help, and trained staff can help you leave, support you to stay or call security. The scheme's website has a map of venues.
- If you are in danger, ring 999. If you cannot speak on a mobile, listen to the operator and press 55 when prompted, and your call is put through to the police.
Tinder's own advice is simple and worth repeating: if you feel uncomfortable, leave. Ending a date early is always allowed, and bar staff will help if you ask them.
What if something feels wrong before or after?
- Cancel if the story keeps changing or the pressure builds. You owe nobody a first date.
- Block and report them in the app, from their profile or the chat, so the app can review the account.
- If they will not leave you alone afterwards, the National Stalking Helpline, run by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, is on 0808 802 0300. Report threats or harassment to the police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.
- If the relationship develops and you are worried about a new partner's past, Clare's Law lets you ask the police in England and Wales whether they have a history of domestic abuse. Scotland has its own Disclosure Scheme for Domestic Abuse Scotland (apply online, at a police station or on 101), and in Northern Ireland the PSNI can advise.
- If a match asks for money at any point, before or after you meet, stop and read our guide to romance scam signs.
Is it OK to look someone up before a date?
Yes, for your own safety, and the check is private. A lookup reads publicly available information and licensed sources, for personal use such as confirming that someone you are about to meet is who they say they are. Keep it proportionate: you are confirming an identity, not researching a past, and results must never be used for decisions about credit, employment, insurance or letting a property. If the checks come back clean, stop checking and go and enjoy the date.
Common questions
Is it normal to look someone up before a first date?
Yes. Checking that a match is who they say they are is sensible, and Tinder's own safety advice encourages screening someone with a phone or video call before you meet. Keep it proportionate, and use a private lookup so they are never notified.
What should I check before meeting someone from Hinge or Tinder?
That their photos are theirs (a reverse image search), that they will appear on a short video call, and that the number they gave you fits their story. Then plan the date in a busy public place, with your own transport and a friend who knows where you are.
What is Ask for Angela?
A UK safety scheme in participating bars, pubs and other venues: asking staff for 'Angela' discreetly tells them you need help. Trained staff can help you leave, support you to stay safely or call security, and the scheme's website lists participating venues.
Can I find out if my date has a violent past?
Not with a phone lookup. In England and Wales, Clare's Law lets you ask the police whether a new, former or existing partner has an abusive past, and they will consider disclosing it where that is lawful, proportionate and necessary. Scotland runs its own Disclosure Scheme for Domestic Abuse Scotland.
Will my date know I checked their number?
No. A StoryCheck lookup sends nothing to the number and never notifies the person. Looking at their WhatsApp profile does not notify them either, because WhatsApp does not show anyone who viewed their profile.
